Dear Members,

Welcome to the latest roundup of what’s been happening around Aylesbury Squash Club over the last few months.

It has been a highly active period both on and off the courts. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive wrap-up of our recent Club Championships and Racketball Doubles results, alongside a well-deserved congratulations to our First Team on their brilliant performance in Bucks League 1. We also have updates on several key facility improvements—including the new bar dartboard, upgraded club Wi-Fi, and upcoming essential court maintenance.

Finally, we are continually looking at how to improve our internal competitions. You’ll find details below on our newly launching Junior Leagues, plus a quick survey where you can share your feedback on tournament formats to help our volunteer team plan effectively for next season.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate their time to keep the club running smoothly. I hope you enjoy the update.

Racketball Doubles Club Championship

A huge thank you to everyone who came down to support the Racketball Doubles Club Championships on Saturday! It was fantastic to see so many members and families creating such a brilliant atmosphere. Congratulations to our new champions, Tom Phipps and Paul Strong, who took the title after a hard-fought tournament, and a massive well done to runners-up Dan Desousa and James Saker. Finally, a special shout-out to Dan for organising and running such a smooth and successful event!

Save the Date: Bucks County Racketball Tournament Coming to Aylesbury

We are incredibly excited to announce that Aylesbury Squash Club has been selected to host the Bucks Squash County Racketball Tournament on Saturday 27th June!

It is a massive privilege to have the county’s best racketball action coming right to our home courts. Whether you want to enter and test yourself against the top players in Buckinghamshire or just come down to support, grab a drink from the bar, and watch some elite-level matches, make sure to keep the day completely free.

Full entry details, tournament formats, and schedules are being finalised as we speak, so keep an eye out for more information very soon!

Racketball / Squash 57 Club Champs

The tournament action doesn’t stop here! Mark your calendars for Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July for the Racketball / Squash 57 Club Championships. Whether you are looking to claim another title or just want to enjoy some fantastic competitive games, we want to see as many of you out there as possible. Stay tuned—entry details and sign-up will be on MMM very soon!

Professional Exhibition Success

Thank you to everyone who came down to support the Professional Exhibition night. It was a great evening for the club, with a packed gallery on Court 1 and a fantastic atmosphere in the bar for those watching the stream.

We saw some excellent squash, with our own Johnny Williams taking on Karim Abdel Gawad and Jack Togs playing Mohamed El Shorbagy, before the main event between the two former World Champions.

An event like this takes a lot of work behind the scenes, and we want to say a big thank you to the team who made it happen:

Tom Phipps for organising the pros and setting up the matches.

Dave Berry for providing the food on the night.

Maxine, Simon T, and the events team for all their work managing the tickets, bar, raffle, and general setup.

The raffle raised some great funds for the club, and we appreciate everyone who bought tickets and supported the night.

Club Wi-Fi and Internet Upgrade

🌐We’ve upgraded the club’s internet infrastructure to improve connectivity across the facility. Members can now access ClubWiFi (no password required) in the squash corridors. Beyond better browsing, this upgrade provides a much more stable network to support the integration of our court lighting and heating systems, ensuring everything runs smoothly—especially during busy club events!

Carpets cleaned and viewing area re-decorated

You might have noticed a few improvements around the club recently. The carpets throughout the building have now been professionally cleaned, and the main viewing area in Court 1 & 2 has been completely re-decorated and tidied up.

Safeguarding Officer

We’d like to say a big thank you to Catherine Forward, who will be stepping down as our Club Safeguarding role in the coming months. Over the past few years, Catherine has got some great initiatives over the line, including running the member survey and organising the local PCSO club visit.

Because this is a key role for the club, we are now looking for someone to take over. It’s a vital position that ensures we stay on top of welfare and keep the environment safe and welcoming for everyone. If you’d like to help out and take this on, please get in touch with me or a committee member for a quick chat!

New Bar Dartboard

We are pleased to share that we’ve added a brand-new dartboard to the bar area. One of our members, Jack, was one of the first to give it a try! It is a fantastic addition to the club for some casual fun or post-match socialising. Thanks to Maxine and Simon for arranging this. Members and guests can borrow all the necessary playing equipment directly from the bar. Drop by, grab a drink, and give it a throw!

First Team Crowned Bucks League 1 Champions!

🏆 Huge congratulations to our First Team, who have officially finished top of the Bucks Squash League 1! Captained by Jack Togneri (pictured above with the dartboard), the stellar squad—featuring Dan Desousa, Hugh Perks, Will Longman, Ciaran Sidhu, James Kettle, and Johnny Williams—put in incredible performances all season to secure the title. It’s a fantastic achievement for the players and a proud moment for the entire club. Please join us in celebrating their success next time you see them around the courts!

Club Leagues: Thanks Johnny & Building a Team

A huge thank you to Johnny Williams for managing our club leagues up to this point. Johnny has done an absolutely excellent job keeping everything running smoothly, which we all massively appreciate.

While we have a new league administrator, we are very keen to add more people to the team to help share the load. If you can help out now or might be interested in the future, please get in touch—even a little bit of support goes a long way!

Have Your Say: Club Events & Tournaments Survey

As a club, we are incredibly lucky to have a vibrant events calendar—from the competitive Club Championships to fun social doubles tournaments. However, we know that different members want different things out of these events. Some love the fierce, “best player wins” competitive edge, while others prefer formats focused on fairness, inclusion, and not getting “whipped” in the first round!

Our events are entirely organised by brilliant volunteers, each bringing their own unique spin and energy to how things are run. To help our volunteer team strike the perfect balance for future events, we want to get the definitive view from the membership.

Please take 2 minutes to fill out our quick survey below so we can shape next year’s calendar together!

Survey will close in two weeks (Friday 19th June).

Ladies Squash – Update

Update from Alexandra – ladies@aylesburysquash.com

Ladies Coaching

Ladies’ membership has increased this year following an online campaign. Free trial sessions were held to offer ladies new to squash the opportunity to see what squash is all about, meet our welcoming group of ladies and actually have a go!

Attendance at the ladies-only Monday evening coaching sessions is increasing and there’s a great variety of coaching, training, drills, matchplay and fun activities that always teach something different! All abilities are catered for, so any ladies that are members of the club are welcome to attend. The weekly sessions generally run during term time from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

Ladies Team Squash

For the 2025/26 season we entered 2 ladies’ teams into the Bucks Women’s League. The Cedars team played in division 2 and came a very close second place, missing out on the top spot by only 3 points! The joint top player, Jasmine Field, was voted the Most Improved Player. This is an amazing achievement – huge congratulations to Jasmine.

The Rowans team play in division 3, which is a developmental division, giving ladies new to team squash, the opportunity to play. The Rowans were unanimously voted the “Top Hosts” of the division for being so welcoming and for providing great meals! Thanks to all our team players and to our captains – Julia Foster and Elaine Sidhu.

Ladies County Squash

Throughout the season there is a series of Women’s Afternoons held at clubs across the county. For the first time, one of these sessions was dedicated to girls’ squash.  A Girls In Motion event was held at Wycombe SRC. Girls from our club attended and had the experience of training, matchplay and socialising with girls from other clubs. Thanks to Saffron Field for volunteering as a leader at this inspiring event.

We hosted the last of the Women’s Afternoons which saw a great turn out of ladies from many different clubs. Friendly games were played, followed by the end of season awards and the all important drinks and cake!

For any information or queries on ladies’ squash, please email ladies@aylesburysquash.com

Court Maintenance 3&4 – 6th July for 5 days

Please be aware that Courts 3 and 4 will be closed for essential maintenance for 5 days starting on Monday 6th July.

These courts were last refurbished in November 2024. This work has been specifically scheduled during the summer to fall completely outside of the main squash season, minimising the impact on bookings. Thank you for your patience while we keep our courts in peak condition.

Junior Squash Updates & Volunteer Thanks

Our junior section continues to run well, and it wouldn’t be possible without the team of volunteers working behind the scenes each week.

A big thank you goes to Saffron, who is helping coordinate things to make sure we are all organised on the courts. She is also working closely with Maxine to ensure the off-court work is done, including managing junior enquiries, memberships and payments.

In addition, Saffron has started a new Early Starters Group specifically for 5 to 8-year-olds, which is a great introduction to the sport for our youngest players.

We also want to thank the Gassons, & Jasmine, who support junior squash each week as volunteers. Your regular help makes a big difference to the sessions.

Get in Touch: To sign up for the leagues, enquire about the 5-8 year olds Early Starters group, or for any other junior squash questions, please contact the team at juniorsquash@Aylesburysquash.com.

Launching: Brand New Junior Squash Leagues!

Our junior section is absolutely thriving, with 20 to 30 enthusiastic young players aged 5 to 16 hitting the courts every single Saturday morning. While several of our advanced juniors are already successfully integrating into the adult mixed leagues, we want to give even more of our young players a taste of competitive match play.

To make that happen, we are officially introducing dedicated Junior Squash Leagues! This is a fantastic, friendly way for juniors to test their skills, play new opponents, and build confidence on court.

🏸 Get Involved in Junior Squash
Whether your child is ready for competitive leagues or just starting out, we have a place for them:

Join the New Junior Leagues: This is open to all junior members—including those who don’t currently attend our Saturday morning sessions. If they want to get involved, we want them in!

New to Squash? If you know any young people who want to try the sport, our Saturday morning junior sessions are the perfect place to start. We welcome all abilities from ages 5 to 16.

To sign up for the new Junior Leagues, book a Saturday spot, or find out more, please get in touch with us at juniorsquash@Aylesburysquash.com!

Padel Update

The club is continuing to push forward with plans to introduce covered padel courts, with design work, environmental assessments, and funding discussions actively progressing behind the scenes. To avoid significant consultancy costs under current planning legislation, the club is strategically waiting until August 1st to submit the formal planning application, matching the introduction of new Biodiversity Net Gain rules. On the financial side, £150k of the £400k target has been raised so far, and any members with fundraising experience or relevant contacts are highly encouraged to reach out to help reach the goal.

You can read the full update and view the current design concepts here:

Guest Fees

We encourage our members to invite others to come and experience the sport; bringing along family, friends, and work colleagues is a great way to grow the game. When playing with newcomers, please encourage them to use the right ball (a red ball for beginners) and ensure they have the correct equipment—specifically non-marking indoor shoes, and no old or flaking grips that could damage the courts.

All members can bring a guest twice for free (just let Maxine know in advance). After two visits, you should use the guest booking option on the system. Ideally, we would love them to become members so they can enjoy playing with others, join the internal leagues, and come along to club nights.

If you ever need a bit of flexibility with this, always ask Maxine. As long as it is in the best interests of the club and fair to other paying members, we will always try to be flexible.

Using the invite system for Squash/Racketball League games

  • Having trouble getting games scheduled?
  • Do you have to message people individually to arrange games?
  • Are you getting court cancellation fees due to no opponent?

If so you should be using smart invitations via MMM. This offers several slots to multiple players (your league for example) who can pick a time within the range you selected.

The majority of leagues now use this system and the more players who do the more successful and easier it will be for everyone.

See instructions below:-

Creating and Sending Invites

Instead of booking courts directly, click the blue Invite button on the left-hand side, then choose the group of players you would like to invite. We recommend inviting all your league players as this means it is much more likely to be taken up.

Pick the time slots that suit, we recommend you choosing multiple to ensure your opponent has a range to choose from, they could be working late or finish early that day and able/not able to play at certain times. The button will say invite all if multiple opponents selected (recommended)

Viewing and Accepting Invites

On the home page, please scroll down and you will see “My Invitations”. this contains both invites you have sent and invites you have received. Make sure to look out early in the month. Then press the Review button.

Scroll down, choose an invite to accept using the yellow “squares” button, then click Accept. All done!

Squash Courts – Keep them nice and be hygienic….

If you have an injury, please come straight off the squash court and seek first aid. Only play on if safe to do so and the bleeding has stopped and is covered with a plaster or dressing. Do not wipe blood on any surface area. If blood gets on the wooden floor please just dab any excess off and avoid spreading/wiping it. Please also let the club know and complete the incident book by the kitchen.
